It is the opinion of many people in Lewiston that not enough police attention is given to the careless auto driver and especially in regard to the way automobiles pass electric cars that are stopped to permit passengers getting on or off the cars. In Lewiston, autoists apparently pay little or no attention to electric cars or to people getting on or off the cars, except at the head of Lisbon street, where Traffic Officer Davis makes them slow down, keep to the proper side of the street, and give pedestrians a chance. But other sections of Lisbon street, Main street, Pine street, Sabattus and other streets the average autoist in Lewiston seems to pay no attention to the electric cars and it is up to the pedestrian to look twice before he jumps.

Residents of Irwin Street, Lewiston, watched this morning as a new family moved into the neighborhood and kept busy as bees. One reason for them keeping as busy as bees was because they were just that. About 200 of the buzzing, winged ones took up residency in a tree in front of 55 Irwin Street. No one in the area rolled out a welcome mat for the newcomers. Residents of the street, in fact, tried to find a way to let them know that they were not welcome. As of press time, the bees were still in their new home.

Greene’s volunteer fire department has changed considerably since Fire Chief Alden Peterson and his “big ol’ Buick” started answering alarms 36 years ago. Greene has a fleet of fire trucks now — quite a change from the mid-1950s when Peterson would answer an alarm by hitching a trailer carrying a pump to the back of his Buick. There’s a big fire station now, too, with a lot more space than the converted one-room schoolhouse that was the Greene Volunteer Fire Department’s first home. The department has 27 members now.
