RUMFORD — Rumford Hospital’s Diabetes Clinic will hold its three-part diabetes self-management training classes from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21 and 28, and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4.

Classes are taught by Barbara MacGregor, RN, BSN, CDE, CWS, who has more than 20 years of experience teaching diabetes education, and Elizabeth Perry, registered and licensed dietitian and clinical nutritionist.

These classes are designed to give general information about diabetes and help patients manage their diabetes. The course also introduces patients to a diabetes support system, including follow-up appointments at three months, six months and one year. Classes are covered by most insurance plans including Medicare and MaineCare.

Topics include an overview of diabetes, including the disease process, treatment options, managing hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and sick day management, as well as cooking tips and healthy eating while dining in or out, meal planning and carbohydrate counting. Classes will also discuss cholesterol, blood pressure, A1C, and kidney function tests and what those numbers mean for health, as well as diabetic foot care and diabetic eye care.

All classes will be held in Conference Room A.

Physician referral is required. Those attending must preregister.
