BATH — Lewiston native Chief Petty Officer Brian Carpenter is serving as an electrician’s mate aboard the U.S. Navy’s Zumwalt destroyer.

An electrician’s mate is responsible for maintaining all high- and low-power distribution systems on board the ship.

“I like the camaraderie on this ship and our ability to work so well as a team,” said Carpenter, a 1998 graduate of Lewiston High School.

The ship is more than 600 feet long and features a unique wave-piercing inverted bow that increases speed and stability by cutting through the water. The ship was also built with an innovative design that dramatically reduces its radar signature, giving it the advantage of stealth, something generally associated with military aircraft, not with Navy destroyers.

With a crew of more than 150 sailors, jobs are highly specialized and keep each part of the destroyer running smoothly, according to Navy officials. The jobs range from caring for fellow crew members to maintaining engines and handling weaponry.

“As a crew member of this ship, I’m working on the most technologically advanced warship today which makes my job pretty unique,” said Carpenter. “I have a lot of pride serving in the Navy. It motivates me to do my best everyday and face my challenges head on.”
