MINOT — Selectmen on Monday approved of the Minot ATV Club using town roads to get from the West Minot Railroad bed to the Hebron town line on Greenwood Mountain Road.

Club members present included Dave Castonguay, Jason Piper and John and Jake Marchesseault.

It was determined that the major section of the roads are state roads, which allow up to 1,000 feet of travel. The club only needed access to 500 to 600 feet of Greenwood Mountain Road.

In other business, Selectman Steve French said he expects to meet with Greg Winters from the company that maintains the arsenic filters on the town well this week. He said he’ll likely know what steps must be taken to ensure that water at the Minot Consolidated School meets safe drinking water requirements.

The well supplies the school.

The latest tests show arsenic levels at the school at 14 micrograms per liter of water. Current regulations allow up to 10 micrograms per liter. Until quite recently, when the filters were operational, there was virtually no arsenic present.

French said that while there are other possible explanations, he suspects the filters have failed and will have to be replaced.

French, who is deputy fire chief, also questioned the condition of some town fire ponds. He said Wallingford Pond on Death Valley Road is spring fed and exceptional. The pond on Pleasant Drive is very good, he said, and the underground tanks on Fortin Drive were probably the best solution because minimal maintenance is required.

French noted the ponds on Summit Drive and Highland Drive were of poor quality, not properly constructed and are filling with sediment.

Town Administrator Arlan Saunders told the board he ordered twin 96-foot culverts for the Cool Brook crossing at Pottle Hill Road. HD Supply Waterworks of Westbrook submitted the lowest bid of $16,557.62. The highest bid was $17,900.

Saunders said he will work on the Department of Environmental Protection permit by rule and contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In other business, selectmen signed a quitclaim deed on the former Brown property at 87 Shaw Hill Road to Pratt Realty Holdings Inc.

Selectman Eda Tripp said there are 24 unpaid tax bills for 2014 and 78 for 2015, for a total of $136,497 owed.
