1922 – 2016

AUBURN — George A. Virgin Sr., 94, of Dixfield, died Monday, July 18,  at the Hospice House, Auburn, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Carthage on March 24, 1922, and was the son Alva and Florence (Hackett) Virgin. During World War II he served as a sargeant in the U.S. Army overseas and received three Bronze Service Stars and the Purple Heart.

George worked at Coats and Clarks for 37 years in the saw mill, also at the Dixfield Nursing Home for 16 years as a floor man and at the Rumford Hospital for 18 years. He also worked at Diamond National for 9 years.

He was married in Rumford on Dec. 1, 1945, to the former Jennie Papasadora who died Sept. 19, 2013.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Gilman and husband, Joe, of Constable, N.Y., Veronica Penney and husband, Bobby, of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., Elizabeth Thomas and husband, Roger, of Chesterville, and Judith Brown of Dixfield; two sons, George Virgin Jr. and wife, Pamela, of Canton and Steven Virgin and wife, Debbie, of Dixfield; 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Betty Papasadora of Rumford.
