WAYNE — The Cary Memorial Library is inviting the public to The Gulf of Maine and Climate Change, a presentation by Nicholas Record, at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road.

Over the last 10 years, Gulf of Maine sea surface temperatures have increased faster than 99 percent of the global ocean and almost 10 times as fast as the background warming rate. Now, seahorses are found in lobster traps, and the coast of Maine is plagued by dense swarms of jellyfish.

Record received his PhD in oceanography from the University of Maine in 2012. From 2012-13, he was a visiting assistant professor at Bowdoin College. Since 2013, he has been a senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay.

Record uses computational models and mathematical ecology to understand and predict ocean biogeography, biogeochemistry and climate. He has worked on short-range forecasting, such as predicting the migration patterns of whales, and long-range forecasting, investigating the way ecosystems will respond to climate change.
