I have been reading the comments, pro and con, about the merger of Lewiston and Auburn. I have seen a few of those committees through the years that never reached fruition. Finally, we have a committee that has worked hard to gather information and put forth a charter that will be presented to the communities for a vote.
We, the people, voted and elected the civil servants to serve on the Lewiston Auburn Joint Charter Commission. Soon after it was formed, letters started appearing — some angry — voicing opinions about the proposed merger.
Opinions are fine. We live in a country that allows the people to freely state their opinions. Out of respect for the committee, should we not wait until they finish their work, and we have a chance to view the information before stating opinions?
Country, state and local governments are run by the people and for the people. Are we not the same people who elected the people to serve on that commission? And are we not the same people who will vote to either support or deny the merger?
I have not seen all the information gathered by the commission, but I assume that people will avail themselves of the facts before going to the polls to vote. I know that I will.
