LISBON — Lisbon native Jim Baumer will give a talk on the late John Gould at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Lisbon Historical Society.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Gould was the longtime editor of the Lisbon Enterprise and writer of a weekly column in the Christian Science Monitor. He was also a noted humorist and author of several books about Maine and its eccentric local characters.

Baumer is an award-winning regional writer with books about Moxie and town team baseball. In his most recent book, “The Perfect Number: Essays and Stories, Vol. I,” Baumer details small-town life and includes an essay about Gould. He will use that essay as a starting pont to discuss Gould’s influence as a writer, as well as his place in Maine’s writing pantheon.

Baumer grew up in Lisbon Falls and now lives in Durham. He has been writing about Maine people and the places that define them for more than a decade. In addition to his books, his freelance writing has appeared in many of the state’s daily newspapers, as well as the Boston Globe, Down East Magazine, the Portland Phoenix, and various automobile trade publications.

The event will take place at the MTM Center on 18 School St. Parking and entrance are at the rear of the building.
