LEWISTON — Kathleen Frances Koss “Kay” of 396 East Ave., Lewiston, died Saturday, July 30.
Born in Waterville, she was the daughter of Lillian and Leon Traynor Sr. She moved to Lewiston in her youth, graduating from Lewiston High School (Class of 1948). There she met her future husband and the love of her life, Lionel “Lee” Koss. They were married for 62 years and were friends for nine years prior to their 1953 wedding.
Together they had six children, Pamela, Nancy, Robert, Patricia, Wayne and Kathy. The family lived in various locations due to Lee’s service in the U.S. Army for 28 years. Since the early 1970s, the family resided in Auburn through all of the children’s high school years. In the 1980s, Kay and Lee moved to Lewiston.
A devoted mother and beloved by her children, Kay became very active helping others after her husband’s retirement. Besides her loving devotion to her family, she shared her passion of caring with numerous organizations including: American Legion Post 31 of Auburn, past president; Second District American Legion Department, past president; Grand Dumaine 40 & 8, past president; Robin Dow Seniors, past president; 40 & 8 Voiture 354 Auxiliary, past president; member of VFW Post 1603 of Auburn; and served as councilor staff and board member for 28 years among other social projects. Her favorite charity was Girls State.
She enjoyed collecting a variety of stuffed bears, among ornamental and plates, etc. of bears. Other hobbies were puzzle-making, regular trips to the casino and bingo. The last decade, she and Lee have spent the winter months in Florida while spending more time with family and good friends. A great woman and conversationalist, her presence will be immensely missed by the many she touched so profoundly.
She is survived by her husband, Lionel “Lee” Koss; sister, Madlyn Atkins; brothers, Leon “Sonny” Traynor Jr. and Stephen Traynor ; sister-in-laws, Constance Traynor and Diane Traynor; daughters, Pamela Fournier, Nancy Matthews, Patricia Blake and Kathleen Molloy; sons, Robert Koss and Wayne Koss; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
