GREENWOOD — The town is celebrating its bicentennial Aug. 12 to 14, with businesses, organizations and residents hosting events, Town Manager Kim Sparks said.

Planning meetings began more than two years ago.

“We started off meeting four times a year, then monthly, and now as we get closer, we’re meeting much more often,” Sparks said. “So far, we’re doing good, but the real test is going to be coming up soon. We’re just hoping for some good weather.”

The theme for the parade Saturday, Aug. 13, is “Greenwood Through the Ages.”

“There’s a lot of creative people out there making floats for the parade,” Sparks said. “We’ll also have a band playing music (from the Civil War era) in the parade.”

A silent auction will be held at the Town Hall on Saturday, Aug. 13,with decorated school desks from the Locke’s Mills School offered to residents who sign up.

“We had a lot of antique school desks from Locke Mills School that had been sitting around our Town Hall for a while,” Sparks said. “The Planning Committee thought it’d be a good idea to have some local artists take the desks, paint and decorate them, and then auction them off at the bicentennial.”

The Greenwood Historical Society will be open all three days. Among the events are a book-signing by Addison Verrill and a school reunion.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine, will give opening remarks at noon Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Town Hall.
