BRIDGTON — The Bridgton Historical Society will host Robert Sanford at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5.

He will conduct a guided hike of Pondicherry Park. It will begin at the entrance to the park by the Bob Dunning Bridge. The Historical Society is requesting a $5 donation from participants.

Sanford is chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of Southern Maine and author of “Reading Rural Landscapes: A Field Guide to America’s Past.”

He will explain how careful observation of the landscape can tell of past uses of the land. It’s possible to “read” much of its history by understanding how trees and plants grow, and the significance of paths, stone walls and other manmade features.

Sanford has been helping the group develop a self-guided tour that will be available as a brochure. The brochure also has an optional link to a portion of the existing Downtown Historic Walking Trail, which is available at the Historical Society’s kiosk in the parking lot behind Reny’s department store.

The society also plans to develop an app using the content of the hike.
