1932 – 2016
SOUTH PARIS — Marie Jeanette (Griffin) Hazelton, 84, of Norway, most recently residing at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, surrounded by loving family.
She was born April 21, 1932, in Coolidge, Ga., to Walls A. Griffin and Marie Hazel (McMillan) Griffin. She grew up farming with her family in Georgia and Florida. She joined the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and became a specialist in the Women’s Army Corps.
It was while stationed at Fort Meade, Md., that she met the love of her life, Warren Carl Hazelton. Together they raised a family of nine children. Marie was actively involved in the opening of Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where she worked as a nurse. She was involved for many years with the Women’s Auxiliary. She was a school mentor, a Girl Scout leader and an avid gardener. Her irises won many awards. Her faith and family were the most important things in her life. Marie and Warren celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year.
She is survived by her husband, Warren; seven children, Warren, Beth Guion and her husband, Art, Lisa Lowery and her husband, Terrance, David Hazelton and his wife, Sandy, Julie Baither, Megan Hazelton and her companion, Joshua Shreves, and Morgan Hazelton and her companion, Greg Demnicki; sister, Shirley Ann of Georgia; three brothers, Lloyd of Florida, Bobbie of Georgia, Earl of Illinois; 24 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Marie was predeceased by two daughters, Cindy and Donita.
