Lewiston is to have a series of municipal concerts every Sunday afternoon during the remainder of the summer according to an announcement made by Arthur N. Pettengill. For some time music lovers of this city have expressed the desire for concerts on Sunday afternoons, if music could be provided to suit the day. So much interest developed in the matter that the opinion of the Mayor was called for and he said that it would be a good idea and would receive his heartiest support.

(Editorial) We are in full sympathy with the parents in any section of our two cities if and when the safety of their children is jeopardized by insufficiently controlled motor traffic, but we feel it is regrettable that any group of mothers should seek to take matters in their own hands and attempt to block a street by a sit-down protest. The democratic process provides ample avenues of protest. Lewiston citizens have their elected aldermen in the City Council. The Mayor of the city is Chief Magistrate and available to the citizens. The Police Department is at the call of citizens and there need be no fear of reprisals or persecution. It is not necessary to resort to an illegal procedure, such as blocking a street, to be heard by the city government.

Push pins and sore thumbs — that’s what it takes Joan Hill to develop the 110 Auburn school bus routes that carry 2,685 students more than 350,000 miles within the city in a typical year. As transportation director for the School Department, Hill works on these routes from early June until late August. She starts with anticipated enrollment lists for the system’s 14 buildings. To mark each one of their home addresses, she sticks a push pin into one of the four oversize street maps she uses to develop kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school bus runs.
