1933 – 2016

HANOVER — In the early morning of Wednesday, Aug. 3, at his home in Hanover, Malcolm Gross, 83, found his peace.

Malcolm was born Feb. 20, 1933, in Richford, Vt., a son of H. Alvin Gross and Pearl Perry Gross. As a child, Malcolm and family moved around a lot. Finally settling in Newry, where he met his sweetheart and wife, Barbara, of 61 years. Malcolm and Barbara Stearns were married Sept. 9, 1954, in Mexico. Malcolm was on leave from Fort Bragg, N.C., at the time. He was in the 82nd Airborne Paratrooper during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge in 1955, they returned to Maine to start a family.

Malcolm worked all of his life in the woods, starting with his dad and brothers logging with horses, eventually becoming a self-employed logger and trucker (known as “Tree Taxi”). Malcolm liked to go to hunting camp with his brother, Neil, and nephews. He was very active in the Rumford Point Baseball Association. He coached, was a mentor and lifelong fan. One of his favorite pastimes was to sit on the porch with his grandson, Nick, and watch the traffic go by. He was a quiet, reserved gentleman who was respected by everyone who knew him, and will be sadly missed by his family.

Malcolm leaves behind his wife, Barbara, of Hanover; his sons, Michael and wife, Kathy, of Rumford, Brian and wife, Brenda, of Hanover, Denny of Hanover, William and wife, Barbara, of Hanover, Dean and wife, Janina, of Hanover, and Jason and wife, Leana, of Woodstock; his daughter, Lori and her husband, Ed McPherson, of Rumford Point; Malcolm had 12 grandchildren, Christopher Gross, Joshua Gross and wife, Kirsten, Nicholas Gross, Coleman and Cameron Gross, Ross and Katelyn Gross, Rider and Tracker Gross, Leeann Bradbury and husband, Dana, Cody McPherson and wife, Courtney, and Garrett McPherson; great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Corbin, Capri and Caleb; his brothers, Neil and Douglas Gross; stepbrother, Glendon Marcau and sisters, Sandra Montgomery, Opal Bronson, Millie Murgeder and Allison Childs.

He was predeceased by his parents; stepmother, Mick Gross; brothers, Coleman, Joe and Doc; stepbrother, Kenny Marcau; and his best friend, Peter Baker.
