FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington Athletics will dedicate the recently renovated basketball court in Dearborn Gymnasium to legendary coach Len MacPhee on Sept. 16.

The dedication will honor the longtime coach with the naming of Len MacPhee Court on the newly renovated gymnasium floor. The event will coincide with a campaign to raise funds for a dedicated auxiliary varsity weight room in Dearborn.

MacPhee retired from UMF in June 2001 after serving its students for 36 years. He coached men’s basketball for 24 years, women’s basketball for seven, baseball for six, softball for three. He taught in the physical education department. MacPhee’s service also included director of athletics, chair of the physical education program and director of the Coaching Certificate program. As director of athletics, MacPhee initiated the Athletics Hall of Fame, an athletics newsletter, and the Friends of UMF Athletics fund-raising program.

As a basketball coach, he earned numerous Coach of the Year awards with both teams and holds the record for most career wins in the men’s program with 322 victories. The women’s program is most notable for its back-to-back appearances in the NAIA National Championship Tournament in 1995 and 1996.

MacPhee is a member of the UMF Athletics Hall of Fame, the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, and will be inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016.
