Soil & Water districts bulb sale

AUGUSTA — Kennebec and Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water conservation districts are offering fall bulbs for next spring’s bloom.

Orders are due by Thursday, Aug. 18. The bulbs will be available at the district offices in Augusta or Rockland during the week of Oct. 17.

Waterford Historical Society to meet

WATERFORD — The Waterford Historical Society will discuss the Carding Mill at Old Sturbridge Village at its meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Wilkins Community House in Waterford Flat.

One hundred years ago, the mill was a functioning part of South Waterford “City,” where once there were many mills. In the 1960s, it was taken apart and moved to the museum village.

Robert Spencer will be the speaker. He has done much research, along with David Sanderson, in preparation for a historical marker, which the Historical Society will place at the former site of the mill. The dedication of the historic plaque has been postponed until further notice.

Potluck refreshments will be served.

The Old Town House museum next to Keoka Lake will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays until Aug. 24.

Jones Dance Band at Legion

PARIS — Jones Dance Band will play old-fashioned dance music from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturdays, Aug. 13, 20 and 27, at American Legion Hall on Church Street.

West Paris Historical Society to meet

PARIS — West Paris Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, for a potluck supper.

A regular meeting and election of officers will follow at 7 p.m. Dues will be collected this month.

Walt Bannon of Naples will talk about his mother’s experiences during World War II when the Nazis invaded her Belgium village.

His book, “The White Pocketbook,” is on the shelf at the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and will be for sale at the meeting.

The society’s annual calendar drawing and dessert meeting was on July 18. About 60 attended. AMVETS to honor post namesake

JAY — AMVETS Post No. 33 will honor the 50th anniversary of David Lane’s and Andre Dube’s sacrifices in Vietnam on Saturday, Aug. 20, on Route 4. The public is invited. 

The event will start with a 5 p.m. supper. Speakers and a military ceremony to remember the two Marines for whom the Post is named will follow at 6 p.m. The Second Wind Band featuring Chad Hood will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Donations will be accepted with proceeds supporting Special Olympics. Reservations are required by Monday, Aug. 15.

Archery education at SAD 44

BETHEL — SAD 44 Adult Education will offer hunter safety for bow hunters from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Telstar High School.

The archery education course will provide students with knowledge regarding equipment, proper hunting methods, responsibilities and general safety. 

For a certificate of completion, students must attend all classes and pass the final exam. 

The class is limited to 25 participants.
