A description of rare manuscripts that shed light on a major center of Byzantine civilization will soon be available to scholars for the first time, thanks to the efforts of a Bates College faculty member. Robert W. Allison, associate professor of religion at Bates, is one of the few American experts in Greek paleography, the study of ancient and medieval Greek writing, according to a press release from the college. He is completing work on the first of three projected volumes of the “Catalog of the Greek Manuscripts of Philotheou Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece.” Allison is the only American in a group of scholars from throughout the world who are studying the rarely seen manuscripts.
The material in Looking Back is reproduced exactly as it originally appeared, although misspellings and errors made at that time may be edited.
