POWNAL — Pineland Farms will celebrate summer with a festive, family-friendly evening of folk music and dancing planned for Thursday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The event is intended to evoke the spirit of an old-time barn dance, and will feature the multi-generational fiddle group Les Bijoux (The Jewels), whose members range in age from 8 to “ageless.” The ensemble will perform a lively assortment of Irish jigs, French Canadian reels, and vintage American favorites such as “Red Wing” and “Golden Slippers.”

Leading attendees in a variety of basic circle dances, square dances and contras will be caller Cindy Larock of the Maine Folque Co-op, who often adds some extra rhythmic dash to the music with her wooden spoons. “No prior dance experience is required to participate,” she emphasizes, “just a sense of fun, and a comfortable pair of shoes!”

Cathryn Anderson, who coordinates Pineland Farms’ education programs, encourages people of all ages to attend, including those who would prefer to just sit out and tap their feet while they watch the fun on the dance floor. “We will have other fun activities for younger tots to enjoy,” she says. As a special treat, the event will end with an ice cream social, the cost of which is included in the dance’s $6 admission price. Picnicking on the grounds is also welcome.

The Family Night event will be held rain or shine in Pineland Farms’ special-events tent. Tickets are available at the welcome center. Pineland Farms is located in on Farm View Road in New Gloucester, off Morse Road. Further information is available online at www.Pinelandfarms.org or by calling 207-650-3031
