JAY — The family of the late Michael Holland recently awarded $1,000 Hollandstrong Memorial scholarships to student-athletes who demonstrate a zest for life and learning.
Holland was one of 33 crew members aboard the S.S. El Faro when it sank on Oct. 1, 2015, during Hurricane Joaquin off the coast of Crooked Island, Bahamas. Holland, 25, of Wilton was a Maine Maritime Academy graduate.
Holland’s mother, Deb Roberts of Wilton, along with family and friends raised money for the scholarships through a variety of efforts including the first annual Hollandstrong Fishing Derby in February.
During Roberts’ scholarship presentations, she thanked everyone who helped make the memorial scholarships possible.
The seniors chosen exemplify “the same quiet, fearless leadership qualities as he did, and the same eagerness to live life on the edge, experiencing all that it has to offer — without hesitation or excuses,” according to Roberts.
The scholarships were awarded to Mt. Blue High School seniors Chase Heikkinen and Eryn Doiron, who will both attend Maine Maritime Academy to further their education. Heikkinen plans to major in marine engineering technology, and Doiron plans to study power engineering technology.
Carter Jordan of Leavitt Area High School also received a scholarship. He will attend Maine Maritime Academy and major in marine engineering technology.
Spruce Mountain High School graduate Amber Delaney also received a scholarship. She will attend the University of Maine in Orono and major in mechanical engineering.
