‘Early Gravestones in Southern Maine’
POLAND — Poland Historical Society will host Maine author Ron Romano when he’ll hold a discussion and book signing for his recently published book, “Early Gravestones in Southern Maine.” The discussion and signing will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, in the Old School House Museum in the Town Hall Complex.
Roman is a tour guide and board member for Spirits Alive (Friends of Eastern Cemetery). He has spent the past several years researching the life, times and work of Bartlett Adams, who lived from 1776 to 1828.
Adams arrived in Maine from Massachusetts and established the area’s first stone-cutting shop in 1800, making marble hearthstones, mantle pieces and door jambs, but his more lasting — and visible — impact can be found in the early cemeteries of southern Maine. His shop produced hundreds of slate and marble gravestones, some of which survive today in at least two of the early cemeteries of Poland.
Light refreshments will be served.
