SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) — Police in South Portland say a gun found near a playground by a group of three young girls over the weekend was stolen from a car parked in the area and fired several times.

A woman called police shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday to report that her 9-year-old granddaughter and two friends discovered a gun while they were playing outside. The 5-shot revolver was found on the ground by a construction pallet near the Redbank Community Center.

The girls first thought the gun was a toy but later told the 9-year-old’s grandmother about it.

Police on Monday confirmed that the revolver was reported stolen from a car parked nearby. Investigators believe the gun was recently fired because it contained two spent shells and three live rounds when it was found.
