100 years ago, 1916
The Republican rally in Lombard’s hall, Sabattus, Saturday night, was poorly attended because the posters of the meeting were torn down sometime Wednesday or Thursday. It is not known who did the deed. About 75 Republicans gathered at the hall to hear the speakers.

50 years ago, 1966
A group of Boy Scouts from the Androscoggin County area returned to the Twin Cities shortly before 8 p m. Thursday after spending nearly two weeks at Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron, New Mexico. The Scouts, who paid for the trip from money they had previously earned, left Lewiston Aug. 3 by bus and traveled for six days, visiting a variety of states and historic landmarks before arriving at New Mexico Aug. 9.

25 years ago, 1991
With just about a week left before Twin Cities public schools reopen, superintendents of both systems are looking ahead optimistically to the new academic year. In Lewiston, there’s a sense that The Little Engine That Could is going to chug right up and over Budget Cut Mountain, unhampered by the frustrations other Maine school districts may be feeling. In Auburn, there’s a desire to heal last year’s internal wounds — largely the result of bitter labor disputes — and move ahead.
