1932 – 2016

SOUTH PARIS — Harold A. Phelps Jr., 83, of Auburn, died on Monday, Aug. 22, at Maine Veterans’ Home.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1932, in Auburn the son of Harold and Anne (Grimmel) Phelps. Harold was a 1950 graduate of Lewiston High School, after which, he proudly joined the U.S. Navy as a radio repair person during the Korean Conflict.

He then worked in Chicago as an electrical inspector, then he went in to the U.S. Air Force and was a photo interpreter during Vietnam. He was accepted in to O.C.S. and became a navigator so he could “tell the pilots where to go.”

Harold met Jeanette while in the Air Force and they were married in 1959. He retired from the military as a major and moved back to Auburn in 1972. Harold then graduated from University of Southern Maine with high honors in accounting. He retired from the state of Maine Department of Human Services when he was 62.

Harold enjoyed photography and furniture, but was mostly known for being the best daddy and PaPa in the world.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanette Bermingham; daughter, Christine Geelhoed and husband, Philip, of Poland; sister, Lucy Cowles of Auburn; brother, Allan York of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Andrew and Sophia Geelhoed; nephew, Allan York; nieces, Paula Mikkelsen, Judi Curtis, and Linda York.

Harold was predeceased by brothers, Paul Yorkston and Felix Yurkstus.

Harold’s family would like to thank the Maine Veterans’ Home for their wonderful care; and Ginny the nurse, who was his boss and teacher.
