BRUNSWICK — Maine State Music Theatre recently announced its shows for 2017.
It starts June 7-24, 2017 with the fan favorite “Always, Patsy Cline.” Through letters and visits, amid homespun stories of laughter and heartache, the show explores the friendship between a housewife and the legendary country singer — a friendship began that would last until Cline’s untimely death in 1963. It features 27 classic songs, including “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “Back in Baby’s Arms.”
Frank Loesser’s “Guys and Dolls” will run June 28-July 15. Set in a mythical New York City, it is an oddball romantic comedy that takes the audience from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and into the sewers of New York City.
T-Birds and Pink Ladies will be presented July 19-Aug. 5 with “Grease.” Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high school romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through the songs from the hit movie, including “You’re The One That I Want,” “Grease is The Word,” “Summer Nights,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and “Greased Lightnin.’”
The final show, Aug. 9-26, is the New England regional premiere of the Broadway’s hit sensation “Newsies.” Set in New York City at the turn of the century, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. This all singing and dancing, high-energy show features a score by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and Jack Feldman.
The concert Monday, July 10, features The Hank Band performing its hits, including “Long Gone Daddy,” “Honky Tonk Blues” and I Saw the Light.”
The Who’s “Tommy” hits the stage Monday, July 31. Based on the iconic 1969 rock concept album, The Who’s “Tommy” is an exhilarating story of hope, healing and the human spirit, featuring an exhilarating score.
2017’s Theatre for Young Audiences shows include Robin and Clark’s “Sleeping Beauty” on June 14 and “Alice in Wonderland” on Aug. 21.
All performances are at the Pickard Theater on the campus of Bowdoin College, 1 Bath Road. The off-season Box Office is at 22 Elm St.
