BUCKFIELD — The 2016 edition of Community Day has something for the whole family, including a parade, games, live music and awards for winners of the library’s first writing and photography contest.
Community Day will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5. Parade participants will gather at 9 a.m. at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School at 160 Morrill St. This is for everyone except the children, who will decorate their bikes to ride in the parade at the John D. Long American Legion Post, also on Morrill Street, according to Barbara Wright of the Community Day Committee.
Participants include Kora Crazy Cops, a bagpipe band, antique cars and engines, horses and various community members.
“There’s going to be plenty of floats,” Wright said.
The parade theme is “Only in America” and steps off at 10 a.m. at the high school, travels down Morrill Street, left onto Turner Street and ends at the Municipal Center at 34 Turner St.
The festivities will continue on the field behind the Municipal Center after the parade.
“There will be transportation down to the field with golf carts, which we’ve hired,” Wright said.
In the field, winners of the first Nezinscot Valley Writing and/or Photography Competition will be announced. The competition, which was sponsored by the Zadoc Long Free Library, was put together by the town’s Library Committee. Residents of Buckfield, Sumner and Hartford — the towns the library serves — were allowed to enter in three age categories.
“It’s all an effort to see how we can increase the library’s involvement with people and people’s involvement with the library,” said Bill Glass, Library Committee member.
Submissions, including short stories, poems and essays, will be on display at the town tent on the field. Awards for the age categories ranging from elementary school children to adults will be announced at noon, Glass said.
The Old Gold Band will provide live tunes for the celebration.
“They’re going to have classic rock and blues,” Wright said. “We do have a new PA system, which is good.”
Dana and Friends, a ventriloquist and magician, will celebrate with the community.
Also on the field will be plenty of free games for children and the Rescue Department will host a corn-hole tournament. There will be food vendors, including fresh apple crisp, which is new this year, and the American Legion food truck, Wright said, along with arts and crafts and other vendors. There will also be a raffle and a duck race, with tickets sold along the parade route.
Organizers could still use a few more volunteers. Those interested can contact Community Day Committee Chairwoman Eileen Hotham at 336-2871 or [email protected].
