LOVELL — The Bradley Jazz Collective will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Brick Church for the Performing Arts on Christian Hill Road.
The group got its start in the fall of 2014, when it opened a new concert series called Bradley Street Backstage at Fryeburg Academy’s Performing Arts Center. The original quartet included vocalist Mimi Rohlfing, saxophonist Mike Sakash, bassist Al Hospers and drummer Craig Bryan.
After playing to a sold-out crowd, the group stayed together, performing throughout New Hampshire and Maine. The Bradley Jazz Collective performs creative interpretations of jazz classics as well as original music inspired by the rich tradition of small-group jazz.
Much like the Chet Baker-Gerry Mulligan quartet of the 1950s, the Bradley Jazz Collective does not utilize a guitarist or pianist. In performances the group develops a sense of harmony through melodic interaction between voice, saxophone and bass.
The group will play jazz standards from the 1950s and ’60s, including music of Thelonius Monk, Charles Lloyd, Herbie Hancock, Joseph Kosma, Charlie Parker and George Gershwin.
The program will include sultry ballads, bossa nova and up-tempo swing. Lovell’s Jed Wilson will join the group, and drummer Alex Ouellette may also sit in for the evening.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and younger. They’re available at the door.
