LEWISTON — The Stanton Bird Club of Lewiston and Auburn announces its fall schedule of events.

The club’s 97th annual dinner meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the Ramanda Inn Conference Center, 490 Pleasant St. After dinner, Lee Kantar of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will discuss the health of the Maine moose population.

Kantar is responsible for the management and research of Maine’s moose population. He will share his team’s research on adult and calf moose survival, aerial surveys, disease surveillance and reproduction in moose.

Dinner reservations are required by Sept. 23. The reservation form can be found at the club website. The meal is $18 and starts at 6 p.m. The speaker session, which is free to all, begins at 7 p.m.

The Sept. 17 walk is Birding for Beginners at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Participants will search the 150-acre cemetery, including the pond and power lines, for local birds preparing to migrate. It is an easy walk through open and forested areas.

Attendees will meet at the Promenade Mall parking lot, near Staples, 855 Lisbon St., and the group will carpool from there. The walk begins at 8 a.m. and will end at 10:30 a.m. Trip leader Steve Reed will identify and comment on birds seen and heard, and attendees will also benefit from observations made by other class members. For any questions, call Reed at 319-6630.

All club trips are free and open to everyone, regardless of birding skills. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather.

Fall Sunday Afternoons at Thorncrag features a nature guide starting at 1 p.m. to assist hikers one dry Sunday each month in the fall. The guide will be at the Hayward Gazebo to explain highlights found on the trails. The Gazebo is adjacent to the Thorncrag parking lot off Montello Street.

The Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary offers both easy trails and more difficult areas. It includes areas of open meadow, forest and brushy edges.

The Wednesday Bird Walks are planned to return in October.

The Stanton Bird Club manages the Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary and the Woodbury Nature Sanctuary in Monmouth and Litchfield. It is an environmental organization which seeks to instill a love of nature and create model bird sanctuaries.
