Old-Fashioned community social

KINGFIELD — The yearlong Kingfield bicentennial celebration will continue with an old-fashioned potluck barbecue and barn dance Saturday, Sept. 10, at 164 Main St.

The celebration is free, and local restaurants will provide light hors d’oeuvres and side dishes. The Mt. Abram Masonic Lodge will grill hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken, and there will be a cash bar.

The doors open at 4 p.m. with a social hour. Food will be served at 5 p.m., and the dance will get underway at 7 p.m.

The third measuring of the yearlong beard-growing contest will also take place. Contestants can register under the tent until 6 p.m. Judging will take place at 7 p.m. The categories will be Longest Beard, Best Mustache/Goatee, and Best Beard.

A celebration of Kingfield’s designation as Maine’s fourth Appalachian Trail Community will take place at 6 p.m.

TechnOldie Support offering free courses

FARMINGTON — TechnOldie Support, a University of Maine at Farmington program where students help older adults navigate the modern electronic world, has expanded its course listings to the community.

Navigating the Web: Noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Farmington Public Library.

Windows 10: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the UMF Mantor Library.

College transition program Sept. 19

LIVERMORE FALLS — Spruce Mountain Adult Education will offer its college transitions program beginning Monday, Sept. 19, at 9 Cedar St.

This intensive 12-week course will help students improve their reading, writing and math skills to those of college level. Students will take the Accuplacer, tour local colleges and explore college and career options. Students will receive help with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid application process and discover multiple scholarship opportunities.

Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays, and from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

Completion of the course will earn participants one credit from Central Maine Community College or the University of Maine at Augusta.
