PORTLAND (AP) — Portland city councilors have unanimously voted to authorize an agreement to build what stands to be one of Maine’s largest municipal solar arrays at a landfill in the city.

Wednesday’s vote empowers City Manager Jon Jennings to iron out an agreement with ReVision Energy LLC at a cost to the city of $150,000 over the project’s first six years.

ReVision Energy officials say the project still needs approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection once the contract has been finalized.

The company first proposed construction of the 660 kilowatt array at the Ocean Avenue landfill in June 2015.

Mayor Ethan Strimling says the solar array will help Portland reduce its dependence on fossil fuel-based electricity by 25 percent over the next 10 years.
