Hoping to reach a state-mandated recycling goal of 25 percent by next year, Lewiston will initiate a separate curbside leaf collection program this fall. The finance committee, by unanimous vote Monday, amended a contract with Waste Management of Maine, the current waste collection contractor, authorizing $3,835 per week for three weeks to allow for the new program. It will be the first time Lewiston has collected leaves separately from other waste. Leaves will be collected and used for compost instead of being landfilled as has been done in the past.
