1930 – 2016
LEWISTON —We lost our beloved mom, Aliette “Lee” C. Allen on Monday, Sept. 5, at the Woodlands Memory Care.
She was born in Lewiston to Paul and Leontine Roberge on May 14, 1930, the second of three daughters. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1948. She then attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing, obtaining her RN degree.
On Feb. 23, 1952, she married the love of her life, George E. Allen Jr., and they raised seven children together. They were married for 60 years.
Lee started her nursing career at St. Mary’s Hospital, eventually going to work at Marcotte Nursing Home (now known as d’Youville Pavilion). While at Marcotte Nursing Home, she was responsible for creating the Inservice Education Department and the institution’s first CNA program. She retired from Marcotte Nursing Home after 25 years of devoted service.
Lee and George traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Caribbean. They also traveled annually to Arizona to visit Beth and her family. In 1984, they purchased a camp on Worthley Pond in Peru, where they later built their dream home. It was there that lasting memories were made with their 11 grandchildren. Every year throughout the summer, she and George provided them with a week of fun in the sun at the lake house where “Mimi” made special buckwheat pancakes for breakfast and her signature soups for lunch. These “vacations” with Mimi and Papa were enjoyed by the grandchildren for many years, even into their late teens.
Lee was a member of RAAPA (Rumford Association for the Advancement of the Performing Arts) and performed in many of their annual Christmas presentations. She had the “voice of an angel.” She was an accomplished artist and painted over 100 pictures. She loved gardening and it was obvious by the beauty of the grounds around their home.
She is survived by her children, Steve, Marc and his wife, Donna, Tom and his wife, Naomi, Cindy, Becky and her husband, Ron, Katherine and her companion, Guy, and Beth and her husband, Phil. Also surviving her are her grandchildren, Jason, Paul and wife, Kassy, Matt, Hannah, Adam and wife, Megan, Rachel, Zandi, Alyssa, Jill, Travis, Audrey and fiancé, Peter; and great-grandchildren, Aurora, Madeline and Elana. She is also survived by her sister, Georgette; her cousin, Susan; and many nieces and nephews.
Lee was predeceased by her beloved husband, George, who passed March 21, 2012; and her sister, Gabrielle.
Our mom, mimi, sister, aunt and friend will be dearly missed. She was such a treasure to us all.
We would like to thank the staff at Central Maine Medical Center on M4, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice who provided her special care in her final days, and the devoted staff of Woodlands Memory Care of Lewiston.
