There has been some talk among local bakers of doing away with the five-cent loaf of bread. It is claimed that the work on the five-cent loaf is as great as that on a 10-cent loaf and that there are a number of expenses that enter into the baking of a five-cent loaf that cuts the profit down to a pretty small margin. However, there is a demand for the five-cent loaf of bread and it is doubtful if its manufacture is discontinued.
50 years ago, 1966
Walton Junior High School students will be glad to know they have been saved from a fate worse than weekend homework. Their alert principal learned at the last minute that the panels around the windows of the school’s new addition were to by decorated in bright blue — the school color of Walton’s traditional rival, Webster JHS, not to mention Lewiston High School. Principal Gerald Alden put an urgent telephone call through to Auburn Schools Supt. Lewis E. Webber, and the Auburn Superintending School Committee voted Wednesday night to substitute a nice neutral white.
25 years ago, 1991
The city has in hand a conceptual plan for the renovation of Cedar Street park, a project that is set to go out to bid “very soon,” said Development Director Robert Thompson. A neighborhood workshop in August drew Little Canada children to the park, where they stood on benches painting, drawing, talking, twisting, turning, trying to explain what they wanted in their dream park. Older residents turned out as well, saying they would like to see nicer benches, more shade and nighttime safety for the park.
