NORWAY — Bishop Robert P. Deeley, in a letter signed on Sept. 6, officially changed the name of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish to Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish.

Pope Francis declared Blessed Teresa of Calcutta a saint of the Catholic Church on Sept. 4 in Vatican City.

The parish embodies St. Catherine of Sienna Church, Norway; Our Lady of Ransom Church, Mechanic Falls; and St. Mary Church, Oxford. The parish held two events to prepare for and celebrate the canonization.

On Sept. 1, the Rev. John Skehan, pastor, and Michelle Valcourt, of the Parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Bar Harbor, offered a presentation at St. Catherine of Sienna Church on the process of beatification and canonization and the life of Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

Parishioners gathered for an evening prayer service and reception on Sept. 4.

Susan Conroy, who knew Saint Teresa personally, will visit the parish to speak about their friendship on Sunday, Oct. 16. Conroy made her first trip to Calcutta to work with Saint Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity in 1986, and chronicled those experiences in her first book, “Mother Teresa’s Lessons of Love and Secrets of Sanctity.”
