JAY — St. Rose of Lima Parish will receive $1,400 in cash donated during Catholic Charities of Maine’s eWaste Day at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk.

For over four hours, volunteers at St. Martha collected nearly 50,000 pounds of TVs, computers, printers, VCRs, electronic parts, wiring and other items from over 500 people. Unusable items will be recycled, while usable items will be sold at Threads of Hope, the six thrift stores operated by Catholic Charities of Maine. Attendees also made cash donations, which St. Rose of Lima will receive.

St. Rose will use the money to help with a variety of projects, including the potential licensing of the parish’s kitchen for demonstrations and use by the food pantry, the reopening of the “free store,” which offers clothing to those in need, and a possible community garden that would provide fresh produce to many in need.

“I’ve secured permission to use the lot next door to the parish and reached out to the wife of a parishioner who has experience with gardening,” said the Rev. Paul Dumais of St. Rose of Lima. “Also, I’ve asked her to work with me and youth ministry to create a ‘glean team.’”
