100 years ago, 1916
The lawn and grounds of St. Mathew’s Episcopal church in Lisbon Falls have been transformed into a Gypsy encampment. Here the ladies of this church and the young people of the Sunday school held a Gypsy carnival. The grounds were lighted brightly with electric lights and the ladies and some of the children added a touch of color to the view with their gowns and gypsy costumes. The center of attraction was the tent of the fortune teller and this personage did a thriving business.

50 years ago, 1966
A group of Androscoggin County Democrats assembled Friday afternoon in Lewiston to form the Central Maine Reception Committee for a Portland visit later this month by New York Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The committee, headed by Lewiston Mayor Robert L. Couturier and Shepard Lee, and Auburn businessmen, gathered in the mayor’s office to review plans for the Sept. 25 Kennedy stopover. Senator Kennedy will visit Maine and confer with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kenneth M. Curtis, whose committee, the Curtis for Governor Committee, is sponsoring the program.

25 years ago, 1991
A motion to petition the Auburn City Council to abandon a 1.9 mile gravel section of Spring Road passed unanimously at Wednesday’s meeting of the Auburn Water District. Seeking closure of a portion of the road is part of a recently adopted protection plan for Lake Auburn. Gravel washouts and improper use such as the dumping of trash prompted the action
