1948 – 2016

RUMFORD – James J. Barrett, 68, of Middle Avenue, Mexico, died Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Rumford Hospital.

He was born in Rumford on Jan. 1, 1948, the son of James A. and Florence (Olsen) Barrett, and graduated from Mexico High School, Class of 1967. Jim served with the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1974.

Jim worked as a papermaker at Oxford Paper Company for many years and retired from New Page Paper Mill in Rumford in 2015.

He was a member of the Mexico Congregational Church and was a Boy Scout Leader for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and panning for gold, and was known for his masonry skills. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He was married in Mexico on Dec. 4, 1971 to the former Karen E. Young, who survives, of Mexico. Other survivors include a daughter, Amanda Jacques and husband, Michael, of Peru; seven grandchildren, Beth, Johnathan and Ian Jacques of Peru, CJ and Destiny Myles of Sumner, and Ashley and Alyssa Jacques of Mexico; three great-grandchildren, Hailee and Connor Glover and Wyatt Sicotte of Mexico.

He was predeceased by his parents; and son, James “Jimbo” Barrett.
