A hundred Bowdoin Freshmen saw the writing on the wall last night, disobeyed all orders from the Sophomores and left their college home for the seclusion of Lewiston. The remaining 40 of the entering class were rounded up and were made into sandwich men, their bared backs being used in lieu of the conventional boards. It was Proclamation Night at Bowdoin, and the third year men had posted orders for all Freshmen to appear on the campus at 7 P. Nearly 20 years after it was first opened in 1972, the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge is due for a facelift. “Both entrances and exits to the bridge were designed to accommodate overpasses,” said Community Services Director Roland Miller, “but the traffic never warranted them.” Now, apparently, it does. “We’re starting to have problems, especially in Lewiston, where the intersection is getting to capacity,” he said. “I’ve suggested it’s time to include these in long-range planning because the intersections will be failing in the future.” Although funding from the Maine Department of Transportation for the project probably won’t be available until 1994-95, it’s not too soon to get the preliminary engineering studies out of the way, Miller said. So far, increased traffic flow due, in part, to increased development around the Auburn Mall has been accommodated by adding turning lanes, explained Lewiston Development Director Robert Thompson.
