100 years ago, 1916
“The most wonderful exhibition of wild west dexterity I ever saw,“ said a traveling man of Jack Morrisey, one of the vaudeville features at the Union Square for today. This man has seen them all and he says that Morrisey is by far the best roper, whip expert and sharpshooter he ever saw on any stage.

50 years ago, 1966
Former Mayor Ernest Malenfant hinted Monday that he’ll attempt a comeback with a bid for the mayoralty post in the Lewiston municipal election in November. “I might run,” Malenfant told an inquiring newsman. “I’m thinking about it.” Malenfant indicated that he’s not content with some of the current planning programs. “I can’t understand why the mayor appointed a committee to build a new fire station,” he said, “when we’ve got a perfectly good fire station on Ash Street.”

25 years ago, 1991
On a recent weekend, the Indian Patrol of Minot’s Boy Scout Troop 139 took a two-day 50-mile bike hike from West Minot Village to Canton Lake and back. Led by Assistant Scoutmaster Bob Poirier, the Scouts traveled the abandoned Maine Central Railroad track from West Minot to Buckfield Village. The Scouts reported a great deal of beaver activity along this stretch of their journey — beaver dams, lodges, trails and cuttings — and they gathered pieces of gnawed twigs and branches as souvenirs.
