1916 – 2016
LEWISTON — Alfred “Al” Joseph Turgeon, 99, born in St. Louis, Mo., on Dec. 1, 1916, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept 26, in Lewiston.
Alfred and his parents moved to Duluth, Minn., when he was an infant and in 1921, his family moved from Duluth, Minn., to Lewiston where he lived until his death.
On Sept. 23, 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. In December 1941, he was married to Juliette Franck Turgeon of Frenchville. He met her when she was a student at St. Mary’s Nursing School in Lewiston. He was deployed with the 103rd Infantry in December 1941. He served as a cryptographer technician in the Asian Pacific Campaign. He was honorably discharged Aug. 30, 1945, after six years of military service, receiving numerous medals and citations, including Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign with four Bronze Service Stars and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
After serving in the Army, Al returned to Lewiston and worked at Dube’s Greenhouse and as a shoe cutter at Knapp Shoe until his retirement in 1981.
He was a lifelong Red Sox fan. He enjoyed fishing and fly-tying as a hobby. He enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes with Shank Street neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed reading Zane Grey Westerns and playing cribbage.
Alfred is survived by three sisters, Jeannette Gagne of Auburn, Dorothy Bilodeau and her husband, Donald Bilodeau, of Lewiston, and Rosalie Feeney of Portland, Ore.; a nephew, Normand Gagne of Westbrook; and a niece, Nancy Whitcomb of Waldo.
Other family survivors include daughter, Frances Turgeon Snyder Bennear and husband, David E Snyder, of Sabattus; granddaughter, Dr. Lori Snyder Bennear and husband, Aaron, of Raleigh, N.C.; grandson, Brian Snyder and wife, Gracie, of Phoenix, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Fiona Rose and Isaac Bennear and Colin and Jack Snyder.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Emily Turgeon; wife, Juliette Franck Turgeon; a brother, James Ouellette and his wife, Herta; his sisters, Lorraine Turgeon and Virginia (Ginger) Bouchard; brothers-in-law, Clovis (Butch) Bouchard and Norman Gagne: a nephew, James Bouchard; and nieces, Sandy Bouchard Denney and Dr. Susan Bouchard.
He will always be in the hearts and memories of his family and friends. We will keep our hearts open so you may shine your love down on us always.
