1930 – 2016

DEERFIELD PARK, Fla. — Helene Mekis, 85, formerly of Lewiston, passed away Monday, Sept. 19. Helene most recently lived in Coconut Creek, Fla., where she moved after living in Lewiston for more than 45 years.

She was born Oct. 20, 1930. Helene earned her bachelor’s degree at Seton Hall University and then went on to become a nun in New Jersey. She became a mother superior before retiring to secular life and moving to Lewiston.

Helene taught English at Lewiston Middle School and High School for more than 30 years. Helene also taught adult ed classes on various topics including photography and a course in modern media that was ahead of its time.

She was an accomplished photographer and won several awards for her photography.

She built her home in Lewiston with her father’s help in 1967 and lived there until she moved to Florida in 2008. Over the years Helene opened her home and provided sanctuary for many who were in need.

Helene was known to her friends and family for her generosity, passion and flair for putting on elegant events in her home. She had a love of life and friendship that permeated all she did. Helene also traveled extensively, both nationally and internationally, and enjoyed experiencing different cultures. She visited China, Israel, large parts of Europe and toured the entire continental United States by car.

Helene is survived by Sylvia Midler, her cousin.
