LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women will hold its semiannual Wise and Strong Women Speak series from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at 97 Blake St.

Now in its fifth year, the series is designed to give voice to the often unspoken stories of women. The program features two women in a public conversation about something they hold in common.

The upcoming speakers are artists Sarah Shepley and Nancy Carroll. Both traveled a path as professional artists with one leading to ministry and the other to social work. The focus of their conversation will be on the role art can play in healing and spiritual care, and on using creativity for healing, self-expression and advocacy.

Shepley holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art and is an ordained interfaith chaplain/minister. A professional artist for over 25 years, she has worked as a jeweler, bookmaker and a printmaker.

Owner of Bean Tree Pottery, Carroll has also worked in the arts and healing for over 25 years. She has created a series of projects working with underserved populations in the greater Portland community.

One of her projects, Art Sets the Table, creates awareness of the struggles, strength and beauty within individuals experiencing homelessness, hunger and poverty within Maine. Her studio is a gathering place for people to share.
