1920 – 2016
LEWISTON— Alcide Joseph “Chief” Grondin, 96, of Lewiston passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Sept. 29, with his family at his side.
He was born in Lisbon on Sept. 12, 1920, a son of the late Alfred and Alma (Plourde) Grondin. He grew up in the Lisbon area and attended local schools there.
In 1942, Alcide enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was involved in the battle of Normandy where he received his loss of hearing injury. After being discharged from the U.S. Army, he returned home where he married his first wife, Theresa Guillemette, on Sept. 21, 1946. During that time, he was employed and worked at every textile mill in Lisbon. On January 14, 1961, he married his second wife, Therese Capano. He retired from Bates Mill in 1982.
Alcide loved to go fishing, play and watch hockey and enjoyed cooking to feed his kids and grandchildren.
He is survived by his oldest son from his first marriage, Rosaire Grondin; and his two children from his second marriage, Diane G. Edwards and Danny Grondin. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Therese (Capano) Grondin; a great-grandson, Ezekiel Edwards; and his siblings, Roland Grondin, Raymond Grondin, Laura Cloutier, Olien Grondin, Joffre Grondin, Louis Grondin and Priscilla Ricker; and many cousins.
