JAY — Police are investigating a burglary at Al’s Tire Center on Route 133 that was reported Sunday morning.

A small amount of change was taken from a cash box, Detective Michael Mejia said. There was no sign of forced entry.

“There is definitely a pattern going on here,” Mejia said.

The town of Jay’s Transfer Station was hit last week after a door was pried open and broken to gain entry to the recycling building, according to Mejia. A small amount of cash was taken in that burglary.

In July, money was taken from the station’s office area. It was less than $200. Other businesses, including Howie’s Welding and Fabrication, Jay Rent-A-Tool and the former North Jay Post Office and Hairitage House have also been burglarized.

Burglaries also are occurring at residences.

Mejia said he put out a notice to Jay residents and business owners on the Jay Police Department Facebook page.

“We have recently had a major increase in property crimes occurring overnight in Jay,” he wrote. “Several overnight break-ins have been reported over this last month including a few incidents this past week.”

Mejia and other Jay officers are asking that Jay residents and business owners be extra vigilant in securing property.

“Suspects in recent break-ins are barely getting enough money from most places to fill a gas tank; however, it doesn’t seem to be slowing them down,” Mejia wrote.
