Community Concepts of Auburn will distribute free surplus food to low-income people Monday and Tuesday at the Multi-Purpose Center. Bill Seekins of Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources says some of the food being distributed was purchased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to stabilize market prices. For example, he explained, if there is “an extra large crop of peaches in this country, the USDA would buy enough of those peaches to stabilize that market price and then would make the peaches available for distribution.” Community Concepts Administrative Assistant Claudette Therriault said her office distributes surplus food in the spring and fall in both Androscoggin and Oxford counties. “Spring’s distribution provided food for between 10,000 and 11,000 households in both of these counties,” Therriault said.
