LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women has announced its October programming. All morning programs are from 10 to 11:30 a.m. unless otherwise noted.
Rethink Your Drink: Thursday, Oct. 6. Student nurses from the University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College will discuss the amount of sugar in common beverages.
Peasant Pantry Café: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. The Peasant Pantry Café features one-pot sustainable meals from different countries. This month, the dish will be German dish called Weisse Bohnensuppe, a white bean soup. The meal is open to the public at no charge, and donations are welcome.
Self Esteem, Part Three: Tuesday, Oct. 11. This is a group discussion about self-esteem, what it is and how to develop confidence.
Stand up for Yourself, and Anxiety Coping Skills: Thursday, Oct. 13. This group participation will talk about advocating for oneself and coping skills for anxiety.
Flu Shot Vaccines: 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Nursing students will provide free flu shot vaccines for the coming season. Registration is required.
Wise Women Speak: 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. The center will host a public conversation between Sarah Shepley and Nancy Carroll as they discuss how each found meaning in creativity and service.
Calendula Soap Making: Wednesday, Oct. 19. Participants will learn to make soap using calendula grown at the center.
What’s in Your Food: Thursday, Oct. 20. USM L-A nursing students will explain how to read labels and explain what’s in food ingredients.
Bingo: Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Reiki: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. Women may sign up for a 15-minute Reiki session.
Art Van: Wednesday, Oct. 26.
October Birthday Celebration: Noon Wednesday, Oct. 26.
Clothing Giveaway: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27.
Quilt Raffle: Call the center at 207-513-3922 for raffle tickets, to be drawn on Friday, Oct. 14, during the Wise Women Speak discussion.
The center’s hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays. It will be closed Monday, Oct. 10, Columbus Day. All women are welcome; programs are offered free and no appointments are needed. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily, and the center has a shower.
The center is also seeking volunteer applicants for companions. The companion role requires women to have a professional background in social work, teaching, nursing, chaplaincy or other related fields, and companions work with local women. The commitment is a half-day weekly. Those interested should contact 207-513-3922.
