OQUOSSOC — The Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society hosted the second annual Rangeley Regatta Sept. 17.
Middle-schoolers from Rangeley, Phillips, Kingfield and Stratton battled for points in a variety of competitions for the 2016 Rangeley Regatta Cup.
Eighty-seven first, second and third place ribbons were handed out to team members representing their schools in the boys’ and girls’ mile run, canoe and kayak team relays and crew-style rowing races in the society’s restored authentic Rangeley boats. The students also competed in fly-tying and fly-casting and archery on a 3D course.
Four separate competitions involving the arts and knowledge also determined the championship. The outdoor trivia contest came down to the final question, with Stratton edging out Rangeley for the crucial three points.
Points were awarded to Rangeley for team spirit and to Stratton for sportsmanship.
At the end of the day, the crowd moved from the Outdoor Sporting Heritage Museum to nearby Oquossoc Cove as the water events took center stage. These races were officiated by Guide and Naval Academy Graduate Capt. Kevin Sinnett.
A team of two girls and two boys from Rangeley took the blue ribbon in the Co-ed Canoe Relay Race. Stratton School then answered the challenge and eventually pulled away from the field with first-place finishes in the relay and both boys’ and girls’ Rangeley boat races.
During the awards ceremony, all were treated to ice cream as the ribbons were awarded. The crowd cheered as all victors rang the newly dedicated Oquossoc Schoolhouse Bell in triumph.
Stratton claimed the cup with a final point total of 43, followed by Rangeley with 31.5 points and Phillips/Kingfield with 23.5 points.
