1958 – 2016
AUBURN — Gilbert Mark Smith, 58, a resident of Poland passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, at Clover Manor in Auburn, following a long, courageous battle with brain cancer.
He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 25, 1958, the son of Wesley and Doris (Smith) Smith. Gilbert attended Greene Central School and also graduated from Leavitt Area High School in Turner in 1976. On June 28, 1986, in Monmouth, he married Denise P. Beaulieu. Gilbert worked for 26 years at Phillips Elmet/ELMT on Lisbon Street in Lewiston. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed fishing with his best friends, Roger and Claude, and Gil was also an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Smith, of Poland; two daughters, Nicole Rioux and her husband, Joseph Zembas, of Turner and Adrianne Tapley and her husband, Ken, of Mechanic Falls; his grandchildren, Taelor Jordan, Justin Harding and Evan Labbe; his sister, Brenda Leighton and her husband, Don, of Lewiston; his niece, Nicole Noel and her husband, Timothy, of Sabattus; and his nephew, Darren Leighton and his wife, Sue, of Wales, his aunt, Phyllis Ambrose of Turner; and his mother-in-law, Theresa Beaulieu of Auburn.
He was predeceased by his parents, Wesley and Doris Smith.
