NEW SHARON — A New Hampshire man is accused of importing illegal mushrooms, after police found some in a bag hidden in the trunk of his car.

Scott Croteau, 28, of Milan was stopped Friday on Route 134 by Maine State Police Trooper Randy Hall for a minor traffic infraction. Hall said he smelled green marijuana and while searching the vehicle, with the help of Trooper Seth Allen, he found green marijuana hidden inside a flashlight in the trunk.

They also found psilocybin mushrooms inside a Wal-Mart bag hidden in the spare tire space of the trunk, Hall said.

Croteau admitted he brought the mushrooms from his house in New Hampshire to eat while attending the Harry Brown Harvest Ball in Starks, Hall said.

Croteau was charged with illegal importation of mushrooms, a felony, and possession of mushrooms, a misdemeanor.

A conviction on the importation charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Croteau was released on $500 cash bail from the Franklin County jail in Farmington on Saturday.
