It has been suggested that Lewiston have a Municipal ice rink on the Athletic Park the coming winter and that funds for defraying the expense connected with the plan be raised by public subscription or by the sale of season tickets to those interested in ice skating. Other cities have done it and it has proven a great success. There are many people, adults and children, who enjoy ice skating and who would develop “the habit” if there was a safe and convenient place available.

It’s an experiment, but it just might work. Over the last two months, about 100 tons of Pionite dust have been “densified” into pellets now slated for burning at a biomass plant in Stratton, according to Public Works Director Robert Belz. Pionite dust — a residual of the Pioneer Plastics operation resulting when sheets of material are cut to size and the surfaces sanded — has been a thorn in the city’s side for at least 10 years. If the experiment works out satisfactorily for both parties, there may now, at last, be an acceptable disposal for the material that has been stored in gigantic piles at the Gracelawn Road landfill.
