TEMPLE — The Temple Historical Society at its next meeting will explore the connection between an apple that originated on Cyrus Deane’s farm in the 19th century and the Underground Railroad that provided safe houses to 19th-century slaves as they made their way to the Canadian border and freedom.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the Temple Town Hall on Temple Road/Route 43.

Participants will have the opportunity to savor a taste of the Deane apple, also known as the “9-ounce” apple. They will also get to view a 20-minute video produced by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association about the Maine Heritage Orchard in Unity. The orchard is home to about 150 apples that originated in Maine.

Those with wild or “antique” apples growing on their land or in their neighborhood are invited to share a taste of them with those attending the talk.

A small exhibit on the Deane apple will be displayed in the Temple Town Hall through October.
